What Does the Mazda Check Engine Light Mean?

Your check engine light isn’t something to fear. With knowledge comes power, and the fine folks in the service department here at Liberty Mazda are happy to impart their knowledge about the check engine light on your brand new Mazda3 or Mazda CX-5. Prepare for enlightenment, Manchester-area drivers, as we detail that the check engine light isn’t only an indicator of engine problems, but other aspects of your car as well.

Why Is the Check Engine Light On?

If your new Mazda6 check engine light goes on as you round a bend along Interstate 91—one of the curves that hug the Connecticut River—there are a few potential culprits causing that interfering illumination. Which systems within your Mazda are potentially problematic? The light could be on because of the following:

  • There is a problem with the engine’s electrical system
  • There is a problem with the emission control system
  • The fuel tank is empty or extremely low
  • The gas cap is missing or not screwed on tightly enough

Additional Check Engine Tips

If you’re worried about danger, your car is likely safe. With that said, there are a few tips that will keep yourself, your passengers, and your car in one piece:

  • Avoid driving at high speeds if the light flashes continuously or stays on for a long time. These signs indicate that you should visit an authorized Mazda dealer service department as soon as possible.
  • One quick solution to a lit check engine light is to disconnect, then reconnect your car’s battery. Our Liberty Mazda technicians don’t recommend this as a solution for New Britain residents, as this action may hide old problems or create new problems.

SKYACTIV®-G Engine Tips

The impressive SKYACTIV© TECHNOLOGY in turbocharged engines is not your average engine, and not only because of its ability to deliver fantastic fuel efficiency. If your Mazda is equipped with one of these engines, like the SKYACTIV®-G 2.0T or the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T, there are a few things to keep in mind to avoid SKYACTIV®-G engine problems on New Britain roads.

  • After sustained strain like driving up a long hill, driving at freeway speeds, or towing for a long time, idle the engine for at least 30 seconds before stopping it to avoid damage.
  • Do not race or over-rev the engine, especially right after it’s been started, to avoid damage.
  • Do not race or over-rev the engine after starting it in extreme cold.
  • Change the engine oil and filter according to the Schedule Maintenance section of your owners’ manual.
  • Use only the recommended engine oil according to your owner’s manual, do NOT use extra additives.
